The fire had burned down to embers, and there was still only one bed.
“I'll take the floor,” Ethan said, already pulling a blanket off the shelf.
“You'll freeze.” I hated that I meant it. Three years of beating him to every account, every promotion, and now I was worried about his toes.
He looked at me across the dark cabin. “Is that an invitation, Harper?”
“It's basic survival.”
“Right.” He set the blanket down. Slowly. “Survival.”
The mattress dipped when he lay down beside me, a careful foot of space between us. It lasted eleven minutes. I counted.
